Wanborough Parish Council

Parish councils are set up and governed by legislation and monitored by the relevant local authority, in our case Swindon Borough Council. Wanborough is permitted up to eleven parish councillors who are elected every four years. We currently have     councillors in post.

If the council has fewer than the maximum permitted number of councillors, the spaces are known as 'casual vacancies'.  The Council can often co-opt additional councillors between elections though this is subject to rules governing co-option and eligibility criteria.

Legally a parish council must have at least five councillors. If numbers fall below that level then the Council cannot legally transact business and the Borough may require fresh elections or take the parish back into direct control by the parish councillor.

The senior officer (responsible officer) for the parish council is the Clerk who ensures the Council operates within the law and has a power or legal route to do what it does.

Councillors cannot bind or agree anything on behalf of the Council. Decisions are made by delegated committees or the Full Council.
